Soundscape and Artist Statement

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

My soundscape titled “Here He Comes” is meant to induce fear, especially the feeling of being somewhere you’re not supposed to be. The setting is an abandoned space that you’re exploring, and upon further inspection, it’s definitely haunted. You thought you were alone, but something is getting closer and closer. This track would help all your friends not sleep that night if it were a story told around a campfire. There’s a long buildup, a very loud and annoying middle part, and finally it tapers off. I took inspiration from my favorite sound I had submitted to the class folder, my roommate’s creaky door. It’s a constant in my life and it’s just as annoying slowed down as it is in real time, but it’s extra creepy. The creaky door layered on top of other sounds I really don’t like creates depth and takes the listener to a different place and time. I especially focused on scene setting, like how the alarm and creaky door are a different area of the space than the underwater geese part. As the squeaking noise speeds up, you can tell he’s getting closer. Some parts are awful to listen to, and that was the intention. I think I could’ve been a little more careful with fade ins and fade outs as well as that *one* noise that bothered several of my classmates. One of my favorite parts is the end, where the listener finally finds the exit.
