This article was especially interesting because it is eight years old, and now we live in a time where lots of people are collecting NFTs. In 2014, it was relatively unheard of to pay a lot for digital art, but now so many people are into it. Owning them is a way of showing status for rich people like Mark Cuban in the same way other types of art are. Michael Green says in his artist statement that digital art lives on Tumblr, and that it is the modern-day museum. He then goes on to say that digital artists will never be able to sell their art and get rewarded in the way that modern artists had in the past. It’s interesting looking back on it, because the most expensive NFT of 2021 sold for $69.3 million, more than the original dog piece did. Green says that we should move forward with the times, but that we never will. I’m interested to see if he’s selling his own NFTs, and if he feels silly for being so pessimistic about the future. Maybe he was just ahead of his time! Below, I included both really cool NFTs and some ridiculous ones.
